Dubai route halted as Virgin Atlantic reshapes winter 2026 flight network
South Africa services expanded despite network reductions
DUBAI – Virgin Atlantic has suspended its seasonal flights between London Heathrow and Dubai until at least winter 2027, marking another setback for international air connectivity linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The airline confirmed the route will remain paused throughout the winter 2026 season, with a possible return next year depending on safety assessments and passenger demand. The move places Dubai among a growing list of destinations affected by regional aviation disruption as several global carriers continue revising schedules.
The London-based airline described the decision as a “temporary pause” and said affected passengers would be contacted directly with options including refunds or rebooking. The suspension comes as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office currently advises against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates.
London-Dubai route
Virgin Atlantic said the changes are part of adjustments to its winter 2026 flying programme driven by “evolving customer demand”. The Heathrow-Dubai route had been scheduled to resume operations from October 26, but the airline has now removed the service from its winter schedule.
Dubai has faced mounting pressure on international air traffic in recent months as conflict across the Middle East continues to disrupt flight operations and traveller confidence. Virgin Atlantic joins several major international carriers that have either reduced frequencies or suspended services to the emirate. Airlines including British Airways, Air France, KLM, Air Canada, Cathay Pacific and Air Astana have also adjusted Dubai operations amid the regional situation.
Seattle services have also been suspended for the upcoming winter season, although Virgin Atlantic plans to restart the route on March 27, 2027. Passengers travelling to the US city will instead be redirected to partner carrier Delta Air Lines, which continues to operate daily flights from London Heathrow.
South Africa flights
While Dubai and Seattle services are being paused, Virgin Atlantic is significantly increasing capacity to South Africa during the same winter period. Flights to Cape Town will operate daily from October 25 to March 27, alongside four additional weekly services on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Johannesburg will see a 78 percent increase in capacity, with daily flights plus three additional weekly services on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The airline said the expanded schedule would provide travellers with greater flexibility and stronger winter sun connectivity to the region.
